SUCCESSFUL NOVEL PLOTTING

Most of my fiction and non-fiction books can be found on Amazon. Although my main love is writing novels, I enjoy writing non-fiction, including my monthly column on writing short stories for Writing Magazine. Giving talks and encouragement to would-be writers is one way of giving back some of the enjoyment that writing has brought to me. Contrary to the way some people refer to writing as torture I have always found great pleasure in writing and I try to convey that pleasure and enthusiasm to other people.

STARTING SMALL

I have always dabbled in non-fiction, especially during my 'apprentice days' of getting published in the short story market. I wrote for kids' magazines, creating crosswords and riddle-me-mes and word puzzles. Then came small articles that would appeal to kids' imaginations. Before I wrote any 'How-To' books for other writers, I was writing articles in writers' and other magazines. I always found this a very useful task, since it made me analyse what I did myself in order to show the mechanics of putting stories together and creating characters etc, to other people. During my working life before marriage and children, I worked for the Medical Research Council in the Assay laboratory, where analysis was a way of life. At that time, we were analysing the components of early antibiotics such as penicillin and stretomycin. As a great believer in fate, I think everything we do has a relevance in our lives, and for me, this is one small example of it.
